Seminar Held
Nearly 30 Pennsylvania pork produc
ers and industry representatives recently
attended a free seminar entitled “Beyond
2000: Managing the Modern Sow.” Held at
the Country Table Restaurant In Mt. Joy,
the meeting was sponsored by White Oak
Mills Inc. Dr. Betsy Newton, of Newsham
Hybrids, Colorado Springs, Colorade,
serves as guest speaker. John Chapman,
White Oak’s vice president, pork produc
tion, served as master of ceremonies. Dr.
Newtown addressed the management
and feeding of today’s leaner sows as
well as mlximlzlng sow production.
Attendees had an opportunity to address
specific questions to Dr. Newtown, Chap*
man and other members of White Oak's
professional pork production team. In the

president, pork production, Steve Haye,

DMI Plans Integrated
Cheese Marketing Campaign

Management Inc. (DMI) has as
signed creative development for
its cheese advertising business to
Leo Burnett Co., Chicago, as part
of its plan to develop the indus
try’s first nationally integrated
marketing campaign to build do
mestic sales of U.S. produced
cheese products.
With the assignment, pending
USDA contract review, Burnett
will add creative for cheese adver
tising to its current media plan
ning and buying assignments on
both milk and cheese for DMI.
The assignment is part of a pro
jected $53 million integrated mar
keting effort on cheese being plan
ned by DMI for 1998.
The integrated marketing plan
is being based on a landmark seg
mentation study conducted recent
ly by Burnett for DMI.

The study, which identified pri
ority growth opportunities for
dairy product sales, surveyed
nearly 5,000 consumers. As a re
sult of the study, two major cheese
consumer segments surfaced
which staff and agency planning
teams will address.
In addition to advertising, the
plan will include retail promotion,
public relations, foodservice mar
keting and the strategic applica
tion of DMI-funded product, in
gredient and nutrition research to
enhance current and future mar
keting efforts.
DMI is the domestic and inter
national planning and manage
ment organization responsible for
increasing demand for dairy pro
ducts on behalf of America’s dairy
farmers. The organization man
ages the American Dairy Asso
ciation, National Dairy Council
and U.S. Dairy Export Council.
