A34-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 13, 1997 ‘Miles’ Goes The Distance At Denver Sheep Show ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff DENVER (Lancaster Co.) Instead of nicknaming the lamb ‘Traveler,” as the man who helped transport the wether suggested, Rachel Day knew better. At the suggestion of a good friend, she decided to call the market lamb “Miles” as in the saying, you know, “Miles to go before I sleep . . . .” Through a series of mishaps and miscalculations, the lamb that she purchased from Ohio traveled to Pennsylvania by way of New Jersey—at least that was the plan. As it turned out, it took several attempts for a friend of the family. Dr. Robert Herr, to finally pick up “Miles” and bring him home. Luckily for Rachel, it all worked out in the end—because on Thurs day evening she won grand champion market lamb at the Den ver Fair. Rachel, 15, daughter of Cliff and Anna Day, is in the 10th grade at Garden Spot High School. Instead of taking the suggested name “Traveler” for her 135-pound heavyweight Suffolk crossbred from Herr, she took the advice of friend Gina Baumiller to call it "Miles.” But even Rachel knows that names can only do so much to win the attention of the judge. It was the work Rachel put into feeding and exercising the market wether including stepping the ram up a ramp 10-15 feet in length almost every day that gave her the market championship. Rachel said she will be showing sheep at the Ephrata and New Hol land fairs. In the end, show judge David Lytle, a Hampshire breeder from New London, said that with the amount of meat on the lamb, it was obviously the winner. He said it simply stood out as superior to the other lambs. Rachel’s wether won out over the reserve champion, the middle weight champion shown by Ryan Donough. In this case, Ryan, 13, son of Ed and Laßue Donough, Manheim, chose the nickname “Taz.” As to who suggested the name, Ryan simply said that “it needed a name,” and the TV cartoon “Taz manian Devil” provided it. By the way—the lamb is pretty mild-mannered, compared to its pen-and-ink TV counterpart. Ryan is in the Bth grade at Man heim Central Middle School. He indicated the Suffolk crossbred wether, at 11 pounds, is homebred from the family’s own ewes and rams. He won champion at Denver a couple of years ago, according to his mother, Laßue. Ryan said he put Taz through a devilishly rigorous hurdle prog ram. The lamb was run in a 30-foot, circular track with six hur dles, like those used by track and field stars. The wether got 20 laps through the hurdles every day. Ryan will be showing more sheep at Ephrata Fair, New Hol land Farmers Fair, Manheim Farm Show, and the state Farm Show. Travis Redmond, 13, son of Jean and Henry Redmond, Mohn ton, won grand champion ram with his Shropshire ram lamb, “Bud dy.” Travis, Twin Valley Middle School 7th grader, won reserve champion last year at Denver. Tra vis will be showing at several fairs, including Reading, Oley, New Holland, and the stale farm show. Lytle said that the ram is “extremely long in the loin” and shows a great bit of character for a Shropshire. Reserve went to Jay Zimmer man, 17, son of Jay and Joann Zim merman, Reinholds. He won with a Southdown ram, “Pioneer,” He’s a junior at Cocalico High School. Lytle was impressed with the Suffolk spring ewe, which he thought was an “extremely thick topped ewe. It stands on a good set of feet and legs,” he said. Lytle noted that the sheep is “one of the more correct sheep we had to look at today." The supreme ewe was shown by Andrew Gerhart, 10, son of Glenn and Cathy Gerhart, Reinholds. Andrew showed a spring ewe obtained from Lyn Lee Farms, State College. Andrew is in the slh grade at Adamstown Elementary and will be showing at various fairs, including Ephrala, New Hol land, Keystone International Livestock Expo (KILE), Man heim, and state Farm Show. The reserve ewe was shown by Jimmy Zimmerman, 13, son of Jay and Joann Zimmerman, Rein holds. Jimmy showed a Hampshire spring ewe. He’s in the Bth grade at Cocalico. He will be showing at Ephrata, New Holland, KILE, Manheim, and state Farm Show. At Denver there were a total of 24 exhibitors, 44 market sheep, 61 breeding sheep in all, 10 diffe rent breeds of sheep. Following is a list of show placings.
