AlB-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 13, 1997 ‘Sculpted’ Hog Grabs Judge’s Attention At Denver The 2. pou , supreme ,_nverwase: first Denver swine championship. At right Is show judge Larry Arnold. ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Fanning Staff DENVER (Lancaster Co.) A “super athletic-looking” hog that appeared to be “sculpted out of piece of marble or something,” according to the judge, won supreme champion market swine Tuesday evening at the Denver Fair. The 250-pound supreme gilt was exhibited by Patrick Good, 18, to his first Denver swine championship. Show judge Larry Arnold, Womelsdorf, chose the medium heavyweight division winner to supreme champion, a black gilt that exemplifies one of those “real trendy kind of hogs,” the words used in the industry today, he noted. Those kinds of hogs, Arnold indicted, generally “hand up good carcasses are really lean.” Patrick, son of Amos and Patri cia Good, Lititz, is a senior at War wick. He exhibited a crossbred Hampshire/Yorkshire gilt obtained from Oscar Manbeck, Bethel. Arnold chose the reserve champion exhibited by Kyle Fleener, heavyweight division winner. Kyle, who won last year’s reserve champion at the fair, showed a 265-pound barrow, a Hampshire crossbred. The hog was obtained from Jim Parlett, Airville. Kyle, 13, son of Tim and Sarah Fleener, Robesonia, is in the Blh grade at Elco Middle School. He said that he often exercises the hogs. He said his dad helped pick out the hog at the Parlett side. In the showmanship competi tion, Dean Livengood took senior champion, intermediate champion went to Kyle Fleener, and junior champion went to Chescey Hoover. In all, there were a total of 12 exhibitors and 21 hogs at the third annual swine show. Following is a list of show placings.
