Sarah Alison Roberts of Charles County reigns as the 1997 Maryland farm queen. She was selected from 22 contestants. Judges were Alex Hamilton, public affairs director for the Virginia Farm Bureau; Shelley Knight, information spe cialist for the West Virginia farm bureau; and Joel Rotz, director of local affairs for the Pennsylvania farm bureau. The pageant was held at Cow Palace at the fair grounds in conjunction with the Maryland State Fair. Other farm royalty crowned at the pageant were first runner-up Rebecca Miller, Baltimore coun ty; second runner-up Amanda Shahan, Harford County; third runner-up Kelly Beckley, Wash ington County; and fourth runner up Laura Johnson, Howard Coun ty- ‘Tm very excited to be the state farm queen, and I hope that I will live up to the farm community’s expectations,” said Sarah, the 16-year-old daughter of Harold and Shirley Roberts of Bryan town. The Roberts farm a 120-acre farm belonging to Sarah’s grand father William Roberts. They raise tobacco, hay, field com, and Black Angus cattle. Sarah has an 11-year-old sister, Katie. On the farm, Sarah drives the tractors, helps with the hay and com, and spears, cuts, hangs, and strips to bacco. In addition to her new responsi bilities as farm queen at the state fair this year, Sarah is keeping EXTENDED PARTS DEPT. An eight-year member of the farmer’s fortune 4-H club, she owns and manages a flock of 25 Suffolks, and shows them at the county and state levels. Last year at a local fair she had the supreme champion ewe and supreme champion ram. She also raises Angus heifers and broiler chick ens. When not busy on the farm Sar ah has been active in promoting beef.
