Allentown Swine Championship

afternoon, John also won supreme
market hog at Allentown.
John, 13, White Hall, showed a
February Hampshire gilt, home
bred out of a Rodibaugb boar from
Rensselaer, Ind., to supreme
champion. John, in the Bth grade at
White Hall Middle School, said it
was his first supreme champion
ship at the fair.
It was close competition in the
supreme gilt championship drive.
John’s February Hampshire gilt
won narrowly, in the judge’s mind,
over the Spotted swine champion
shown by Leslie and Lazarus
Brothers.
The judge, Don Verhoff, who
breeds Landrace, Duroc, and
Hampshire hogs in Ottawa, Ohio,
said all the gilts had god under
lines. But Verhoff enjoyed the
supreme gilt’s extra length, which
it “handles very well.” Verhoff
said the February Hampshire gilt
shows “femininity, length of body,
and leanness. Length of body is
very, very crucial."
According to John’s mother,
Donna, 45 years of breeding and
showing history in her family went
into the championship. “There’s a
lot of history,” with her family
showing swine, she noted. Breed
experience and an exercise area,
what she calls the “hog playpen,”
helped out—the hogs are allowed
to exercise for about a half hour
every day in a sacrifice lot.
At the market show on Thurs
day, John showed the supreme
market hog, a 250-pound purebred
Duroc from the heavyweight
division.
John will be showing at the
York Fair, the Keystone Interna
tional Livestock Expo (KILE), and
the state Farm Show.
Verhoff was pleased with what
he saw out of the Duroc boar, a
February boar shown by Cheryl
Bennecoff. The boar looked “real
ly young and fresh,” he said. “It
will leave you with fast growing,
easy moving market hogs. It puts
the best package together, in my
mind.”
Cheryl, who raises hogs on their
Kutztown farm with husband Todd
and their children, said the home
bred hog used Power Play genetics
from Howard Parrish, Edon, Ohio.

won with a Duroc at Allentown,
though they have picked up
championship banners in the past.
The Bennecoffs will be showing
at Sullivan County Fair, Blooms
burg Fair, York Fair, KILE, and
the Farm Show.
In all, there were a total of 90
market hogs shown on Thursday.
On Thursday, showmanship win
ners included Amy Wehr, supreme
champion showman, senior divi
sion winner. Amy, 17, is the
daughter of Delores and Elmer
Wehr, Oreficld. She’s a senior at
Parkland High School.
Intermediate showmanship
champion was George Billig, 12,
ion of Tim and Teresa Billig, New
Tripoli and a 6th grader at North
western High School. Junior win
ner was Jeremy Gonzalez, 10, son

Becky is in the 3rd grade in the

Owen J. Roberts High School.
There were a total of 350 hogs
and 20 4-H’ers between the two
