    KUTKZTOWN (Berks
Co.) The Kutztown Fair 4-H
Beef Show was held recently at the
Kutztown Fairgrounds in Kutz
town, with a number of youth from
Berks and Lehigh counties
participating.
Judge for the show was Keith
Bryant, of Penn State University.
The entire beef show included a
showmanships competition, a fit
ting competition, a market steer
show and a breeding beef show,
with Charolais, Simmental, Here
fords, and Limosine, as well as
crossbred, or commercial,
animals.
Ben Weist of Leesport, a mem
ber of the Berks Beef 4-H Club,
showed the grand champion mark
et steer, which was also the
1,176-pound champion
heavyweight
Kelly Dietrich of Hamburg, also
with the Berks Beef 4-H Club,
showed the reserve grand champ
ion, which was the 1,155-pound
champion middleweight
The reserve champion heavy
weight was a 1,208-pound steer
exhibited by Kristy Dietrich of
Hamburg.
The reserve champion middle
weight was a 1,137-pound steer
exhibited by Matthew Samsel of
Oley, who is a member of the Oley
FFA.

In the fitting competition, Mark
Man wilier of Leesport was the
grand champion, while Ben Weist

reserve grand champion.
In beef breeding heifer comped
tion, in the crossbreed/commercial
category, Matt Manbeck of
Womelsdorf showed the champ
ion, Mary, while Benjamin Weist
showed the reserve champion,
Annie.
In the Limosin breed, Kristy
Dietrich’s junior yearling. Selene,
was champion, while Kelly Diet
rich’s summer yearling, K2DL
Champaine, was reserve
champion.
In the Charolais breed, Cathy
Levan of Hamburg showed the
champion, a senior calf, Sisco. Jus
tin Shollenberger of Mohrsville
showed a junior calf, BLF Cool
Carol, to win the reserve
championship.
In the Hereford breed Emilie
Miller of Womelsdorf showed her
Polled Hereford, a junior yearling.
Dutchess, to win the champion

showed the reserve champion, DL
Abigail, also a junior yearling.

Boar Sale Results
STATE COLLEGE (Centre
Co.) Pennsylvania Department
of Agriculture’s Meat Animal
Evaluation Center held its 22nd
Performance-Tested Boar Sale on
Aug. 13 at Penn State’s Ag Arena.
The sale started with the top
indexing pen of boars from Russ
and Randy Wilson. The top
indexing individual boar sold for
S97S to Fleming Brothers of
Hampstead, Md. A Yorkshire lit
termate also sold for $975 to Hen
ry Johnson of Selbyville, Del. The
two highest prices in the sale,
$1,200 and $1,050,. respectively,
were paid by James R. Sanders for
two littermate Yorkshire boars
from a pen consigned by Penn.
State, lire 26 Yorkshire bpars
averaged $621.
The 14 Durocs averaged $5ll.
The top-selling Duroc, consigned
by Jim Parlett, sold to Mark San
ders of Gettysburg for $4BO. The
second highest Duroc price $7OO
was for a littermate sold to Henry
Johnson of Selbyville, Del. and a
boar consigned by Bruce Smith

The nine Landrace boars aver
aged $437. The top-selling Land
race, bred by Lazarus Brothers-
Grant Lazarus, had the largest
scanned loineye, 7.6 S square
inches, of any of the boars in the
sale. This boar sold to James and
Jeanne Mathis of Julian for $4BO.
The four Hampshires in the sale,
consigned by Donna Strawbridge
and Steve Wilson, averaged $394.
The two Berkshires consigned
by Russel and Arlie Combower
sold for $450 and $5OO, respec
tively, to Gideon Renno of Mif
flintown and Heberling’s Farm of
Newburg.
The 55 boars in the sale sold for
an average of $539.
