Thomas ville 4-H’er Adam Sellers made a clean sweep of the top placings at the York County junior market livestock summer show and sale, exhibiting both the champion hog and lamb. The annual summer roundup show was held at the 4-H Center on Aug. 9 and 11. Wrapping up the event was the sale of the judged animals, with the 78 hogs and 33 lambs generating a com bined $27,917 for the 53 partici pating 4-H members. Dual champion winner Sellers, 18, is a veteran livestock breeder and showman, winner of numer ous awards over the past several years in both 4-H and open class competition. A June graduate of Spring Grove Area High School, he plans to begin studies in 1998 at an Illinois junior college where he can continue his interest in live stock judging. During the year interim. Sellers expects to con tinue his employment on an area farm and complete his final year in 1998 of 4-H eligibility. Swine Sale Mediumweight hogs proved especially popular in the swine show, with that weight division champion and reserve claiming the overall show titles in the final runoffs. Finishing behind Sellers’ mediumweight and grand champ ion was Jessica Innerst, Red Lion, in the reserve spot Adam Sellers’ 233-pound, purple-ribbon winner opened the swine sale which followed. It was purchased after a round of spirited bidding by Hatfield Packing Com pany, long-time area livestock youth supporters, for a $2.25 per pound price. Second in the hog sale lineup was 9-year-old junior member Jessica Innerst, with her 231-pound homebred entry. The reserve winner brought the sale’s top price, $3 per pound, and sold to Hake’s Farm and Seed Service of Red Lion. A pair of crossbred Duroc litter mates got the judge’s nod for the champion pair title, exhibited by Hanover 4-H’er Tammi Grubb. Under the sale gavel, the 266-pound and 258-pound pigs brought identical $1.30 per pound prices from winning bidder Delw ood Kitchens, Inc. Lane Innerst, Red Lion, exhi bited the reserve champion pair, weighing in at a closely-matched 213 and 217 pounds. The 12-year old’s runner-up pair also com manded identical final bids, both selling to M.B. Graphics, Jason Martin, with a $1.75 per pound price. Champion lightweight ex hibitor was Bobbi Myers, Thomasville, whose 219-pound entry sold for $2.05 per pound to A.C. Service and Repair, Rick Roth. Champion light heavy weight title went to East Berlin 4-H’er Rick Jones, with Hatfield Packing the buyer at $1.50 per pound for the 237-pounder. Allen Combower, New Free dom, picked up two division awards, exhibiting both the champion heavyweight and the re serve light heavyweight, Leidy’s Inc. bid on Cornbower’s 252-pound heavyweight, at $2.25 per pound. His 246-pound light heavyweight sold on a $1.65 per pound bid to Glen Rock State Bank. A total of 78 head in the swine sale averaged $1.25 with the champion, and averaged only York 4-H Holds Junior Livestock Show, Sale three cents less when the champ ion price was excluded. Lamb Sale Opening the lamb sale was Sell ers’ champion 128-pound pure bred Suffolk, one of two he pur chased for project use when the family oversold its spring crop of lambs. Buyer of the winning wether was 4-H Center caretaker John Kann, who made the final bid of $1.85 per pound. Reserve champion market lamb was a homebred from the flock of Dover 4-H exhibitor Michael Bur rell. The crossbred Suffolk, a 126-pounder, topped the sale at $3.50 per pound, selling to B and N Enterprises. B and N is the name coined by the 4-H youth’s grandparents, who have supported his project’s efforts in this manner for the second consecutive year. Molly Ault, Hanover, exhibited the champion lightweight, an 84-pound lamb which sold to Tex as Lunch for $1.20 per pound. Champion mediumweight went to Adam Sellers, with buyer Ray Kopp bidding last at $1.20 for the 108-pound entry. Reserve lightweight was exhi bited by Lindsay Jones, East Ber lin. Lindsay’s 82-pound lamb sold to Morrell Myers on a $2 per pound bid. Tabitha Ebersole was the reserve mediumweight exhibi tor. with a 108-pound entry that sold to Stewart Ebersole on his $1.20 bid.
