School of Vetenniry Medicine
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
(Continued from Pago AST)
eyville, Md) is an enzyme immu
noassay membrane test developed
for use in people. We became
aware of this test at the Mid-
Atlantic Poultry Health meeting
in February 1997, The demon
stration was dramatic and revealed
that the test is rapid (taking about
20 minutes), and easy to perform,
but was marketed for human
medicine and was very expensive.
The test kit costs about $25 per
test. We obtained a test kit as
soon as we came back and tested
the samples from the Lebanon
county layer flock, which demon
strated positive test results. Since
then, our lab has used it on the
subsequent AI infected flocks and
it seemed to work quite well.
Initial evaluation of the Directi
gen( test compared to virus isola
tion indicated that the standard vi
rus isolation is more sensitive but
the Directigen( test is usually test
positive on multiple tissues from
AI virus positive flocks. There
have been no false positives, so

we can be confident if we get a
positive test, but cannot be abso
lutely sure if the Directigen( test
is negative. As we gain more ex
perience with this test, we believe
this will be a useful adjunct to our
standard A 1 diagnostic tests. A
manuscript is in preparation com
paring the Directigenf with virus
isolation. Since our early work
with this test, we have found that
the University of Pennsylvania
contract price for the kit is only
about $lO per test and now most
labs are using the test routinely.
As a final note, continued
vigilance by flock owners, service
persons and other flock health rep
resentatives will ensure the great
est likelihood of eradication of
this virus m commercial poultry.
It is essential that these individu
als continue, as planned, with the
surveillance and testing efforts
implemented by the Pennsylvania
Department of Agriculture in con
junction with the PADLS diag
nostic laboratory system .
