Ozzie, Waldo Leave Mark At Lebanon Steer Show ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff NORTH CORNWALL (Leba non Co.) Show judge John Hausner, Dover, instructed the Lebanon Area Fair Beef Show exhibitors; “Send me cattle I can use, are free-moving, that represent the industry.” Bearing a lot of confidence and a steer that met the mark was Justin Fuls, 14, holding “Ozzie,” medium weight champion. Ozzie left its mark, too, weigh ing 1,245 pounds, an Angus/Maine Anjou/Chianina from a sale in In the breed show, Polled Hereford junior champion heif er went to Margeaux Flrestlne, 12, left, daughter of Michael and Martene Flrestlne, Womelsdorf. Reserve went to Margeaux’s sister, Morgan, 11, right. In center is Jessica Watson, Lebanon Area Fair queen. Simmentai champion bull went to Angela Blauch. The animal was exhibited by Cassie Schaeffer, center. At left is reserve champion. At far right Is Jessica Watson, Lebanon Area Fair queen. In the showmanship contest, Danny Atkins, 21, son of Bill and Judy Atkins, Lebanon, won champion FFA showman. Champion 4-H showman went to Jon Harnlsh and reserve to Heather Fuls. Maryland. Hausner who raises 40 head of purebred Angus, grew up in the cattle business, and has exhibited cattle nationally said the steer “is a complete kind of steer, with a lot of red meat, a lot of expression and explosion in the rear.” Justin, son of Kevin and Karen Fuls, Richland, is a ninth grader at Conrad Weiser High School. This was his first supreme market champion at Lebanon. Justin said that he spent an hour getting Ozzie ready for the show ring, and "clipping was the hardest part,” he said. Justin Fuls, Richland, second from right, won champion market steer at Lebanon with “Ozzle.” Jon Hamish, 19, Lebanon, second from left, won reserve with “Waldo.” At far left is John Hausner, judge and far right Is Jessica Watson, Lebanon Area Fair queen. Justin said his father, Kevin, helped select the steer. Justin said he saw the name in a book and selected it for the animal. The heavyweight champion steer showed “a lot of eye appeal” to Hausner, who indicated that some of the steers on exhibit “were bigger than I’d like,” he said. But as a representative of the industry, the steer worked well enough to win reserve championship for Jon Hamish, Lebanon. Jon, 19, son of Guy and Carol Hamish, is a sophomore at Black hawk East Junior College in Kew anee, 111., majoring in animal sci ence. The Cedar Crest graduate showed “Waldo,” a 1,310- pound Chianina/Angus/Maine Anjou steer. Jon picked the steer up from a friend in Ohio, selected from a vid eo catalog. He picked out the steer right away because of its discem able “question mark” white band ing on the steer’s face, and “I liked its style and balance,” he said. Jon said there were three things to winning a supreme champion ship, the first time for him at the Lebanon Area Fair: “good animal, good feed, and good feet.” Prepar ing the animal took some time too, including clipping and grooming. Hausner was impressed with the way the exhibitors prepared for the show, feeding and grooming the cattle. In the breed show. Polled Here ford junior champion heifer went to Margeaux Firestine, 12, daught er of Michael and Martene Fire stine, Womelsdorf. Reserve went to Margeaux’s sister, Morgan, 11.
