Amanda Daugherty Reigns In York County JOYCE BUPP York Co. Correspondent YORK (York Co.) Amanda Daugherty is York County’s new est dairy princess. Her crowning was the highlight of the annual county dairy prin cess pageant, held June 28 at tAe 4-H Center. She will represent York County’s dairy industry as a spokesperson for the next 12 months, continuing a tradition as the 39th dairy princess named in the county since 19SS. Amanda, 16, is the daughter of Philip and Terry Daugherty, 2135 Lemon Street, York. The Daughe rty family operates a 35-head milking herd, with 250 acres of com, hay and small grains. Aman da is employed on the family farm, assisting with milking and other chores. A senior at New Freedom Christian School, Amanda plans to attend college with a major in preveterinary studies. She partici pates in volleyball, softball, and soccer and is a member of the York 4-H Beef Club. “I’m looking forward to going to schools, especially the elemen tary schools,” said Amanda of her dairy promotion plans for the up coming year. During the pageant program. Amanda performed a puppet and storybook presentation geared toward children of pre-school age and gave a speech on how milk’s nutrition benefits people of vary ing age groups. In answer to a “fishbowl” question about how she would react to being called a “farmer’s daughter,” Amanda replied that she would point out the extra privileges and oppor tunities afforded children who grow up in a farm environment She noted that she would further emphasize that if it were not for farmers, people would not have much to eat or drink. Supporting Amanda in her promotion efforts will be one of the county’s largest-ever court of assistants, including five dairy maids, one dairy miss and two I’il misses. MILK. IT DOES A BODY good: Jessica Yohe. As part of the pageant program, each of the dairy maid candidates gave a brief, orig inal presentation on milk and its nutritive benefits. Heather Crowl, 15, is the daughter of Joyce and Ellis Crowl, Airville. She is a former particip ant in the dairy maid and miss pro grams and a member of the Milk- N-Money 4-H dairy club. A sophomore at Red Lion Area High School, Heather is a member of the FFA and an honor roll student. Stormi Greek, 13, is the daugh ter of Bonnie and Leonard Greek, Delta. She is a former dairy miss and a Milk-N-Money 4-H dairy club member. Stormi is a fresh man at Red Lion Area High School, where she is a member of the cheerleading squad, and a dance student. Also returning as a dairy maid and former dairy miss is Jessica Pomraning, IS. Jessica is the daughter of Teresa and Myron Pomraning, Delta. She is a Milk- N-Money 4-H dairy club member and active in the bandfront and musical activities at Red Lion Area High School, where she is a junior. Jessica Yohe and Janet Yohe are the daughters of Jerry and Kathy Yohe, York RIO. Jesica, IS. is a sophomore at Spring Grove Area High School where she participates in volleyball, track and field. She is employed part time at the Stump Acres Dairy Farm, working both in the raw milk store and with other farm responsibilities as needed. Janet Yohe. 13, is a freshman at Spring Grove Area High School, and plays on the basketball and volleyball teams. She also enjoys music and plays the viola. Janet is employed at Stump Acres Dairy Farm, where she has assisted with the milking since she was nine years old, and sometimes helps with the raw milk sales. Stevie Anna Greek is the dairy miss. Stevie Anna, 6, is the daugh ter of Bonnie and Leonard Greek, Delta. She will be a first grader in the fall at Clearview Elementary School. She is a student of dance and also enjoys helping milk the family’s 52-head Holstein herd. Frankie Greek and Amber Tho mas were named Til dairy misses. Frankie. 5, is the daughter of Bon nie and Leonard Greek, Delta, and will attend kindergarten at Gear view Elementary School. Like her sisters, she enjoys dance lessons. Amber Thoman, 3, is the daughter of Gail and Gary Thoman, Dallas-. town, and enjoys being involved with whatever farm activities the family is engaged in doing. Tanya Thoman. outgoing dairy princess, reviewed her year of promotion and how it grew from her lifelong love of living on a dairy farm. She noted that she dip ped a lot of ice cream during her reign, especially at one particular school promotion for 300 chil dren. Tanya expressed special thanks to Dallastown High School and her employer, Brown’s Orchard Retail Market, for their cooperation in allowing her to have time to fulfill her many dairy princess obligations.
