July 4th weekend is usually a
busy time for everybody. There
are picnics to' attend and family
gatherings too.
As a child we celebrated with
cap pistols and sparklers. We lived
along a quiet road and so when a
car passed, we shot our toy guns
from a hiding place in the bushes.
Some years my parents took us
to Owl Hill where we were on
high ground and could see the fire
works in a nearby town. One year
my father parked his 1923 Over
land car too far Off of the road and
he could not get it out of the ditch
even when he unloaded his

seven daughters. This is when
some mot living in the neighbor

the road. I do not think that this
would be possible with today’s
heavier cars. What an experience!
Some of the most beautiful fire
works that I remember were in
New York City. This was in 1939
when the World’s Fair was held
on Long Island. I was with my
younger sister and we watched a
display of fountains and colored
lights at nighttime with music in
the background.

This year a family member will
celebrate a wedding anniversary
and has invited his relatives for a
meal. As close relatives live in
three different counties, they will
travel together to the restaurant
Years fly by quickly and grand
children arc now die age that we
remember our own children being
not so long ago.
How they will celebrate this
July 4th weekend 50 years from
now is hard to imagine. Let us
hope it is still a free country.
