Bl#-Unca*ter Farming, Saturday, June 21, 1997 Adams County Farm Safety Day Camp Adams County Cooperative Extension and 4-H, with assis tance from the American Trauma Society Pennsylvania division, will be hosting the Ist Adams County Farm Safety Day Camp on July 23, at the South Mountain Fairgrounds. ' A full day of interactive safety demonstrations is planned for youth 8-13 years old Any child from Adams’ County, within this age range, is welcome to attend regardless of whether or not they live on a farm. Youth will participate in ten interactive stations that will cover the following safety areas: lawn mower, fire, bicycles, first aid, electricity, PTO entanglements, flowing grains, poison control, all terrain vehicles, and tractor rollovers. Several other suprises are planned throughout the day. Regisglration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the day will finish with supper and skits concluding at 7:30 p.m. An advanced registration fee of $2/child is due to the Adams County Extension Office by July 1. Registrations will be received until the maximum number of par ticipants is reached, so register early. John was chosen for the Pen nsylvania team by placing in the top four during the recently held Pennsylvania 4-H Forestry Judg ing Event held at the Ag Progress Days site is Rocksprings. John was the highest scorer at the event in forest evaluation. Serving on the team with John will be Tresa Albright from Bedford County, Dan Ackerman from Somerset County, and Seth Conway from Clinton County. Mother’s Day Horse Show A Success It was a pleasant but breezy day for the 25th annual Gum Tree 4-H horse show, a popular Mother’s Day activity. Mothers who attend received flowers and special recognition for all the work they do in support ing “children who ride.” Special awards to class winners were black T-shirts with silve lettering commemorating the 25th year of Gum Tree 4-H. The show received good com munity support for Gum Tree, one of the largest 4-H horse clubs in Pennsylvania, and including members from nearby Maryland and Delaware. Show champions follow. King (Owner) 4-H Club Plants Trees A local 4-H club recently planted trees along the Susque hanna River in Exeter Township. The club used funds from a grant by the 4-H National Council and Deft, Inc. to purch ase Famous and Historic Trees. A member could take his or her pet for other people to look at. Members could also take their pet, dress it up, and enter it in a con test 4-H Science Discovery Kits Available “4-H Science Discovery Kits” are available for Hunterdon Coun ty youth programs at the 4-H Department of Rutgers Coopera tive Extension of Hunterdon County. These kits help youth program staff and volunteers, as well as classroom and after-school teach ers, to provide science lessons to youth using a fun, leam-by doing approach. Each kit contains a les son plan and nearly all of the teaching materials needed to teach the Isson in a hands-on way. The kits are aimed at teaching youth in group settings such as clubs and other meetings, day camps and school classrooms. These lessons were developed by faculty and staff of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Topics are: •Geology Where you live (Rocks & Minerals best for grades 3-7) •Don’t Trash the Planet!
