MHiqwtyv Fagninft-frhifday, June* H<4B9Z HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Members of the Senate Agri culture and Rural Affairs Commit tee recently joined to promote Dairy Month in Pennsylvania by sporting “milk mustaches” like those worn in the popular adver tising campaign. Participating in the promotion were Sen. Noah Wenger (R-36), committee chairman Sen. Daniel S. Delp (R-28), Sen. Patrick Sta pleton (D-41), Sen. John Wozniak (D-35), and former Agriculture Secretary Charles Brosius. “On June 3, the Senate approved a resolution recognizing June as Dairy Month in the state,” Wenger said. “Those of us on the Agriculture Committee got together with the dairy producers and processors and decided to celebrate the month and promote the industry by wearing the ‘Got Milk’ advertising campaign’s mustaches. It’s a fun way to make a serious point.” Wenger explained that the dairy business is crucial to Pennsylvan Northeast DHIA Recognizes Outstanding Quality Milk Award Wi ITHACA, N.Y. This year, through the Somatic Cell Pro gram, Northeast DHIA is recog nizing its members whose herds maintained an overall average of 175,000 cells or less by presenting them with the Outstanding Quality Milk Award. Somatic cells arc white blood cells and milk secreting cells normally found in milk. However, the healthier the herd’s udders are, the lower the average cell count will be. Careful milking procedures, . good milking equipment mainten ance and excellent herd manage ment all contribute to a herd’s low somatic count. Not only does a herd with a low somatic cell count include healthier cows and there fore produce more milk, but they set a standard of excellence for the entire dairy industry. Milk with lower somatic cell counts has a longer shelf like, and results in higher yields of cultured products. Winners are presented with a bam sign and a year sticker the first year that they win the award and those who have won previous years are given a year sticker to add to that sign indicating another year of excellence. Out of the approximately 3,900 members that Northeast DHIA serves, 291 were honored with the Outstanding Quality Milk award. Northeast DHIA congratulates them and wishes them continued success for 1997. He said the dairy industry accounts for $1.5 billion in farm income each year, or 38 percent of Pennsylvania’s agricultural income. In addition, Pennsylvani a’s dairy industry makes up nearly 7 percent of the total milk produc tion in the United States. Wenger added that there are 11,000 dairy farms, 39 manufacturers of dairy products, 33 fluid milk processors, and 26 milk producer dealers who make up the industry in Pennsylvania. “Wearing the ‘milk mustache’ is a great way to promote a great Pennsylvania product,” said Wenger. In addition, the senator said, Pennsylvanians each year drink more than 2SO million gallons of milk the state’s “official beverage.” “Drinking milk is a healthy habit that also supports our local economy,” Wenger said.
