Board members serve a maxi
mum term of three years, and are
appointed by the agriculture sec
retary upon recommendations
made by industry leaders, the Pen
nsylvania Farm Bureau, the Pen
nsylvania Farmers Union and the
Pennsylvania State Grange.

released when you see
the blue-gray mold on
the underside of the leaf.
The blue mold on the
North Carolina trans
plants are suspected to
be RIDOMIL insensi
tive since the grower in
North Carolina had used
RIDOMIL on his plant
beds. At the present
time (except for the two
plant beds), the blue
mold was observed only
on the North Carolina
transplants. For this rea
son, we are recommend
ing that the transplants
that came from North
Carolina be destroyed
so that the amount of
blue mold inoculum will
be reduced.
Every grower should
start spraying their
tobacco (beds and Held)
with a protective fungi
cide. We still recom
mend that you use
RIDOMIL preplant, but
then spray the field
transplants with a pro
tective fungicide. At the
present time, the only
labeled material we
have as a protectant is.
DITHANE DF (State
label). DITHANE DF
should be sprayed at 1.5
lbs per acre (small
plants) 2 lbs per acre
(larger plants). You
should apply this pro
tectant spray every 5 to
10 days, or reapply after
a heavy rain. DITHANE
DF is a protectant so
spray coverage of the
entire plant is extremely
important. It is also
important for every
grower to protect their
plant beds. Spray the
plant beds with 10 level
tablespoons of CAR
BAMATE WDG (fer
bam) in one gallon of
water for a seedbed 6 x
50 ft. Again this is a pro
tectant, so coverage is
important. Seedbeds
should be sprayed every
5 days or after every
watering.
Since we are so early
in the tobacco produc
tion season and since the
North Carolina trans
plants have been spread
over the tobacco pro
ducing area (Lancaster,
Lebanon, Centre and
Union Counties), all
Pennsylvania tobacco is
at risk for serious dam
age from blue mold dis
ease. It is extremely
important for all grow
ers to follow the recom
mendation to protect the
Pa. tobacco ciop.
