Eileen Murphy Named Bradford County Dairy Princess CAROLYN N. MOYER Bradford Co. Correspondent WYALUSING (Bradford Co.) After a day filled with milking contests, ice cream eating, and pageantry. Eileen Murphy was picked to wear the crown and hold the title of the 1997 Bradford County Dairy Princess. Murphy is the daughter of Mal colm and Sylvia Murphy of Ul ster. Although Holsteins are the breed of choice on her family’s farm, Murphy opts to show Jerseys through 4-H. Chosen as first alternate was Kimberly Davis, of Warren Cen ter, daughter of Ron and Sally Davis. Their 2SO-acre farm is home to 120 Holsteins. Rindy Harkness of Gillett will serve as second alternate. She is the daughter of Butch and Barbara Harkness. The family has 70 head of Jerseys on their 460-acre farm. “Bradford County can be proud of their royalty,” said the letter bom the judges just before the names were announced, alluding to the full day of activities leading up to the Saturday evening pageant All activities were held in the Wyalusing area, with the 34th an nual pageant being held at the Wyalusing High School. Rounding out the dairy promo tion team are seven dairy maids: Corissa Coolbaugh, Talitha Cool baugh, Tara Gray, Kristy How land, Jackie Schriner, Janean Young, and Heather Yutkanin. The day started with a parade, which was immediately followed by milking contests, ice cream eat ing contests, and a chance to visit with various sponsors of the day. As the evening program began, each contestant was required to give a five-minute presentation and answer an impromptu question. “O the milk will come out tomorrow,” sang a cow-print pa jamas-clad Murphy as she high lighted the benefits of milk and dreamed about having another glass of milk to drink. Next the team was called into action as Rindy Harkness explained that everybody in the world needs milk. “The use of milk goes back to the domestication of animals, probably about 10,000 years ago,” Harkness noted. Finally, it was Kimberly Da vis’s turn to hit the stage as she posed as “Millie the cow.” My product is the very best,” she said, as she told about where milk com es from and how it is processed. The final moment of truth came as Master of Ceremonies Senator Roger Madigan read the final question, “Throughout your child hood, you probably received much advice from your older sib lings. In this day and age, young people face many challenges. What advice would you give to a younger sibling?” Murphy noted that she is the youngest and has received much good advice from her two older sisters. “I would tell them to always to look at the positives in life even when things are at their worst. And I would tell them definitely to drink milk . . Murphy ex plained.
