Shrove Tuesday
February 11 is Shrove Tuesday, followed by Ash
Wednesday, or the first day of Lent, and both imme
diately precede the first Sunday in Lent on February
16. In England, Shrove Tuesday was traditionally a day
for wild football games, symbolic of the inevitable and
seasonal clash between the dark of winter and the light
of oncoming summer. Shriving is a process of confess
ing one’s sins and purifying oneself before Lent. In our
we are more familiar with the Shrove Tuesday
celebration of Mardi Gras, French for “fat Tuesday,”
and the culmination of the Carnival season in the New

1 package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
2-1/3 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 cup orange juice
2 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons chopped,
candied orange peel
oil for deep frying
Stir yeast into warm
water and set aside
Mix together flour, salt,
sugar, and nutmeg. Mix
