Only 28 Days But February Is A Special Month
GAY BROWNLEE
Somerset Co. Correspondent
February is the shortest of the
12 months in the year. Usually, it
has 28 days. Every fourth year
there are 29 days in February. The
next time that February will have
29 days will be in the year 2000.
February is filled with impor
tant days Groundhog Day,
President Abraham Lincoln’s
birthday, Valentine’s Day. and
President George Washington’s
birthday.
There is also Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday is the seventh
Wednesday before Easter. It starts
the season of Lent
During Lent, many Christians
give up something they usually do
or eat at most other times. This is
“fasting.”
They fast during Lent because
they are remembering that Jesus
fasted 40 days in the wilderness.
Groundhog Day is on February
2. Some people think that the
groundhog can predict how many
weeks are left in winter.
If his head pops out of his
underground burrow and the sun
is up, Mr. Groundhog will probab
ly see his shadow.
Then somebody will announce
that winter will last for six more
weeks. Most people know it’s just
for fun.
President Lincoln’s birthday is
February 12. Ash Wednesday, in
1997, is on the same day.
Two days later, Valentine’s
Day is on February 14. It’s a day
to celebrate love. Millions of val
entines will be exchanged
between classmates, friends, and
sweethearts.
Candy, chocolates or flowers
make dandy Valentine surprises.
They say that mailmen and
postmen deliver almost as many
cards on Valentine’s Day as they
do at Christmas.
We are proud to remember our
first president, George Washing
ton whose birthday is on February
22.
The nation will celebrate the
birthdays of Mr. Washington and
Mr. Lincoln this year, on February
17.
Let’s all have fun in February.
