    MARTIN’S
FEED
AND
FERTILIZER
Ed and Bob Martin’s father
purchased the old water-powered
mill along Penn’s Creek near
Coburn in Centre County in 1960.
In 1970 the family Purina
dealership under the name of
Martin’s Feed and Fertilizer, Inc.
was moved to the present
location in the small town where
farmers from all over the area
have hauled their grains for many
years.
Over the last 20 years, many
new dairy farms have been
added to their 30-mile radius
service area because Lancaster
County Amish families moved
here and built new dairy barns
and divided the larger farms into
small units.
Today, the Martins are impressed with the quality of Purina feeds and
the back up research that helps guarantee this quality. “We are very
strict on quality,” Ed said. “And Purina has helped us make sure we are
giving this quality to our customers. It doesn’t always pay to buy the
cheapest feed. You can cut on the quality of ingredients you put in the
feed but you lose in animal health and production."
Martin’s Feed also tries to keep formulas simple so they are more
constant. “Cows don’t like change, and the fewer times you need to
change their feed the better they will produce," he said.
Along with the capability to deliver feeds in both bulk and bags, the
people at Martin's Feed are knowledgeable in many different aspects of
agriculture. Forage testing and soil sampling provide the background
information that forms the basis of many of the recommendations they
are called on to make. If you have need for expert nutritional or crop
management advice and want to deal with knowledgeable people who
know the local area and are very strict on quality control, the Martins
