ASSOCIATION MEETINGS ■ Farm Show is a great place for
agricultural associations to conduct their annual meetings and
seminars since so many members are already attending or par
ticipating in the show.

tious when purchasing
firewood and coal as
winter approaches.
“Consumers should
be aware that the
amount of firewood or
coal they are buying
must coniform to a spe
cific measurement stan
dard,” Brosius said.
“Firewood must be sold
by the cord, or some
fraction thereof. Delive
ries of coal must be
accompanied by an
approved solid fuel
weight slip."
A cord of firewood
must equal 128 cubic
feet. For example, a
neatly stacked rack of
firewood measuring
four feet high, four feet
deep, and eight feet
long would measure
128 cubic feet, thus
constituting a cord.
One-half cord would
measure 64 cubic feet.
Suppliers of fire
wood must provide
buyers with an invoice
listing the full name and
address of the supplier,
along with the amount
paid. Small bundles of
firewood sold at camp
grounds or retail stores
must be sold by the cub
ic foot. Invoices are not
required for these sales.
Likewise, the person
delivering coal should
supply the buyer with
an approved solid fuel
weight slip for each
load or partial load.
In the purchase of
either fuel or firewood,
it is best to purchase
from suppliers who are
known to the consumer.
Retraining the receipt
will help if there is a
problem.
The department's
Bureau of Ride and
Measurement Standards
is responsible for the
regulation of quantity in
firewood and coal sales.

BEEF CATTLE - Charolais judging is scheduled for Sunday,
with the Angus, Limousin, Polled Hereford and Shnmental judg
ing set for Monday. A supreme champion oow and bull will be
selected from nearly 500 entries on Monday afternoon. The
junior steer classes are judged on Wednesday in the Large Are
na, followed by Thursday's Junior Livestock Sale in the Small
Arena.
BID CALLING CONTEST - Members of the Pennsylvania Auc
tioneers Association will participate in a Bid Calling Contest on
Wednesday evening in the Family Corner. A variety of goods
and commodities will be auctioned during this entertaining
event.

BRED GILT SHOW It SALE - The largest bred gilt show in
American gets underway Friday morning in the Small Arena.
Saturday morning's sale, conducted by the Cooperative Swine
Breeders, affords farmers an excellent opportunity to purchase
champion animals to build and improve their herds. The
supremo champion gilt is crowned prior to the start of the sale
BUTTER SCULPTURE - The Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion
Program will sponsor another life-size butter sculpture. This
unique feature attraction will now be found in the Food Court in
the orange East Building.
