Thank You Farmers For Hiving (Is
Support. We Need More Tobacco.
"Farmers"
Maybe we should explain why the auction
started in PA Twelve years ago a group of
609 tobacco buyers came to PA to buy on
the farm They paid I 25/lb while their
competion paid I 30/lb country buying
Then the 609 buyers started receiving
tobacco, things went O K on the I 25/lb
buyer In a short time the 1 30/lb buyer had
no place to deliver his tobacco in the south
and could no longer honor his contracts
Farmers began delivering I 30/lb tobacco
to the I 25/lb buyer He said he had no
place to go with that tobacco but spent his
own money, telling the farmer that tobacco
is worth 25-50C/lb The farmer sold he
had no where else to go A big let
down
That's when a group of PA farmers began
meeting and the idea of auction developed
At that time it seemed there was very good
farmer support for auction After I I years in
business the farmer support has declined
Whyi? Should we stay in auction or not? In
order for auction to stay in business at our
commission rate, we need more volume
we have good buyer support but need
more tobacco Demand is strong
