Penn Yan FFA Members Attend (9th National FFA Convention MARCY QUACKENBUSH Penn Yan FFA Reporter Eleven FFA members from the Penn Yan Chapter of FFA traveled to the 69th National FFA Convention, Nov. 9-18. Penn Yan members who attended were Scott Fisher, Matt Fritz, Jon Hunt, Natalie Jensen, Emily Lilyea, Mike Lilyea, Jim McElwee, Andrew Miller, Marcy Quackenbush, Aaron Vaughan. Steven Vaughan and their adviser John Kriese. The trip started on Saturday, Nov. 9, when the 12 FFA mem bers met 102 other FFA members from across the state. On Satur day, the group toured Blue Seal Feeds in Arcade, N.Y. Here they saw how Blue Seal packages ail their animal feed and seed. On Sunday, the troop toured the Toledo Zoo in Ohio. The FFA members had the chance to see all kinds of animals that people nor mally can’t see in everyday life. Some animals were giraffes, koala bears, seals, kangaroos, and lions. At night, the group went to the Sears Tower in Chicago. On Monday, Nov. 11, the FFA’ers toured the Illini Swine Breeders in Kingston, lowa. The Kinze Planters factory was the next stop. Here the group saw every detail and the steps taken into putting together a Kinze Planter. On Tuesday, FFA’ers toured the Pioneer International Seed Company in Ankenny, lowa. This year was a special con vention to the members of the Penn Yan FFA Chapter because Mike Lilyea, Andrew Miller, and Steven Vaughan represented New York State in the agricultural mechanics career development event. The National Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event is designed to test know ledge and skills in agricultural mechanics. The event includes individual skills, individual and team problem-solving activities, and a written exam. Areas of emphasis include machinery and equipment, industry and market ing, energy, structural, and environmental/natural resources. Each team in the event has com pleted with other chapters in then state for the privilege of partici pating in the national event Out of the 42 teams competing in ther con test Penn Yan placed 14th, receiving a silver award. They were one place away from a gold. Out of the 130 individuals, Steve (gold) placed 36th, Mike (gold) placed 40th, and Andy, (silver) placed 45th. This year, the convention set a record high in attendance with more than 41,000 members, parents, and guests attending. At the convention, members had a lot to choose from.
