installed a trough with water from
the homestead springhouse. Water
breakers have been installed in the
farm’s access roads to divert
stormwater off the roads to control
erosion.
David and Norma Miller, co
operators since 1982, were hon
ored with the Take Pride in
America award. They own a
152-acre farm in Burkittsville,
farmed by Charles Brandenburg.
Com, small grain, and hay are
rotated through the tillable acres.
Field strips were installed in 1992.
This year, the Millers installed a
grass waterway to reduce erosion
and protect water quality, and also
a diversion.
Two years ago the Millers were
approached by the National Trust
for Historic Preservation about
putting their farm in a historic pre-
servation program. They con
sented, and now the entire farm is
in enrolled in the program. The
Millers may not alter the appear

the home or the bank bam, with

Robert and Jean Galey and
Family, Catoctin Creek Farm, re

memorial award. Mrs. Charles
(Elizabeth) Remsburg was on
hand for the presentation. Helping
on the farm are the Galey’s sons
Seth and Todd.
Catoctin Creek Farm is a
25-acre family operation with 16
acres in crops, including pump
kins. The balance is pasture for the
family’s Romney sheep. They
market breeding stock, freezer
lambs, pelts, fleeces, and yams.
