Districts Honor Cooperators

1983. They farm approximately
3,600 acres on different farms,
and each of the last three years
have planted 1,000 acres of cover
crops. Other conservation prac
tices implemented include roof
runoff management, water
troughs, strip cropping, grass wa
terways, stream buffers, and criti
cal area planting. Oak Bluff Farms
has a nutrient management plan,
and there is a manure storage fa
cility that can accommodate 300
cows for six months.
Dyke and Mary Carver were
presented with the Take Pride in
Frederick County award. They
have been cooperators since 198 S.
The Carvers purchased their
dairy farm and also rent Dyke’s

assistant treasurer for the Frederick
district, presents the teacher of the year award to Lois Noff
singer Spurrier.

Carl Carver, Dyke’s father, helps
on the farm. The family milk ap
proximately 95 cows, mostly Hol
steins. Twelve years ago, they
purchased a Lineback cow, and
now she and four of her offspring
are in the milking string as well.
In the last several years the Car
vers have installed water troughs
and three grassed waterways on
the farm. “We graze a good bit,”
said Dyke, “probably 50 acres are
in pasture. It’s been that way ever
since we’ve been there, and I’m
going to keep it that way.” An ag
waste facility has also been in
stalled.

She values the impressionable na
ture of her young students’ minds.
“I teach five-year-olds. Their
little minds are open and they soak
it up,” she said of her work teach
ing youngsters. She received a
certificate of appreciation and a

was held Friday, November IS at
the Jefferson Community Center.
A roast beef and country ham din
ner was prepared by the Jefferson
Ruritan club. Daniel C. Poole,
chairman of the board for the dis
trict was master of ceremonies.
