Held the day after Black Friday,
the biggest shopping day of the
year, the fair provides conscien

ing atmosphere in which to purch
ase life-giving alternative holiday
gifts.
Sponsored by HPI and staffed
by an ecumenical group of more
than SO volunteers, the fair
enables people to deal with two
problems at once - holiday shop
ping and global hunger.
Shoppers purchase
animals or shares of ani
mals in the name of r
friend. The frienc
receives an attractia
HPI gift card, and a fam
ily in need receives th<
HPI animal that ii
purchased.
Colorfully decoratec

animals benefit pool
families in the U.S. and
around the world. Shop

was to give “not a cup,
but a cow” - to provide
families with a source of
food rather than short
term relief.
Since a heifer named

supplied more than one

A time to be thankful for a
bountiful summer and for all of
the other blessings that we take for
granted.
I’ve added up the frozen and
canned goods that I presaved this
summer and found that we have
almost 400 quarts. There is quite a
variety of fruits and vegetables as
there are 39 different kinds frozen.
Over the holidays we should have
an opportunity to give some to our
children when they visit
When I think of blessings, I
think of good health. For the fust
20 years of my marriage, I often
had to take one or the other of our
six children to the doctor. He
made no appointments and there
fore we often waited for hours.
Sometimes the women would say
to each other that they should have
brought their ironing along. At
that time we did a lot of dresses
and shirts as clothes were not
perma-pressed. My mother told
me that she thought everything
should be starched before ironing.
I remember that she cooked a
starch for her clothes.
Nowadays, we make doctor
appointments and still wait an

not realize how many specialists
there are to attend to your needs.
One for your skin, one for your
lungs, one for your eyes, etc. Yet,
we are thankful we have no major
affliction.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful
time to gather family together for
food and fellowship. Children
grow up so quickly and due to dis
tance we do not see them often
enough.
