Penn State Dairymen’s Club Held Annual Meeting JUDY PATTON Union Co. Correspondent Dr. Darwin Braund told the Penn State Dairymen’s Club that classrooms in the future will be homes and local computer sites, so colleges will have to change their programs accordingly. An animal science professor at North Caroli na State University, Braund also said in this talk at die club’s annu al meeting on November IS that ag colleges will have to become more “consumer oriented” to teach ag students how to meet market demands. They will also need to educate students about what agriculture and ag colleges mean to the public. This year’s club Service Award went to Duane Norman, who is a program leader at the U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture Animal Improvement Program Laboratory in Beltsville. Maryland. Original ly from a farm in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, Norman is a world leader in the development of gene tic evaluation methods for milk solids and linear traits. He has won numerous awards for his research and publications. He also takes time to be a 4-H leader and Dairy Bowl coach in his local area. Terri Snook was honored at the club meeting as the 1996 winner of the Poage Grant-in-Aid for excellence in dairy judging activi ties. A junior in dairy and animal science at Penn State from Lafay ette, New Jeresey, she was the high individual at the 1994 New Jersey State 4-H Contest and the 1992 Delaware Valley Spring Contest She also judged at the 1994 National 4-H Contest Terri has served as corresponding sec retary of the Penn State Dairy Sci ence Club, New Jersey’s alternate state dairy princess, and an assis tant for the Nittany Lion Fall Classic Sale. Beth Raney will replace Dale Olver as secretary-treasurer. Other club officers will be elected next spring at the annual board meeting. Penn State Dairy Judging Team coach Dale Olver reported to the club the results from this year’s collegiate judging contests. At the Eastern States Expo, the team of Meranda Dum, David Fava, Char les Houp and Kraig Sellers placed second overall and first in two breeds. Dum and Fava were in the top 10 overall individuals. Sellers placed second overall Maryland COLLEGE PARK, Md. Honors and awards woe handed out to five persons at the Maryland Egg Council’s 29th annual ban quet, held Oct. 9 at Martin’s in Westminster. John Doerr, professor of poul try toxicology and nutrient man agement at the University of Maryland at College Park, was honored with the Herb Becherman ‘Triend of the Industry” Award. Doerr is the past president of the egg council. Because he was on his way to a speaking engagement in Brazil, his daughter, Elizabeth Doerr, a University of Maryland strident, accepted the award on his behalf. The first Owen P. Thomas De velopment Award, which included a plaque and $l,OOO scholarship, was presented to Nada Tamin. The scholarship was estab lished in memory of Dr. Owen Thomas, chair of the poultry sci ence department at the University of Maryland, 1971-1987, for his long service to the egg industry. Thomas died suddenly last December. Doug Statler of Greencastle, Pa. (Lehman’s Egg Service) was hon ored with the Maryland Egg Council Service Award. Alan Wenger of Rheems, Pa. (Wen ger’s Feed Mill) also received the Herb Becherman “Friend of the Industry” award along with Doerr. The banquet also provided recognition for Rebecca Ensor, a 16-year-old 4-H member from Woodstock (Baltimore County), who won championship honors at the 1996 4-H Egg Preparation and Demonstration Contest during the Maryland State Fair.
