    THIS WEEK WITH
St. Martin
Patron saint of beggars, drunkards, and outcasts, St.
Martin came by his charge of protecting drunkards
from danger through an accident of the calendar.
When the Christians decided to merge the pagan
holidays into their more conservative celebrations, St.
Martin’s Day (November 11) happened to coincide with
the traditional Vma’lia Feast of Bacchus, a day of
drinking and debauchery. His protection of beggars and
outcasts comes from a legend that says that while he was
a military tribune, Martin shared his cloak with a naked
beggar, Martinmas is also linked with slaughtering
because early November was the time to kill
and salt beef, sheep, and hogs before winter.
