John O’Brien, president of
WEPCO, stated that, “We are

effort to bring the benefits of
electric industry restructuring to
one of the oldest and most impor

Smith commented that Dairylea
decided to take the lead in electric
deregulation for agriculture
because of the savings it could
“Our mission state
ment focuses on maxi
mizing net income at
the farm. Facilitating
the bulk purchase oi
electricity furthers our
mission and is similar to
the types of programs
that we’ve already
developed to help
improve our members’
bottom lines.”
Estimates indicate
that the deregulation of
electricity could result
in cost reductions of up
to 25 percent, added
Smith, which translate
to a cost savings for
most dairy farmers of
about 10 cents per
hundredweight.
"The pilot program
will provide valuable
experience with large
scale aggregation of
customers,” said Smith.
“As the PSC has
observed, aggregation
is the way in which con
sumers, including
Dairylea members and
affiliates, can obtain
favorable prices and
service options.”
According to Smith,

State’s first multi-utility

information about
market behavior and
systems operations
throughout most of the
State. “The knowledge
gained from this project
is critical in moving

supply by 1998,” Smith
explained.
