ure storage structure and re
establishment of a vegetative cov
er in the exercise lots. Since these
improvements were made, Kurtz
reports his cows stay much clean
er and have fewer foot problems.
The concrete pad has reduced the
amount of labor for cleaning the
barnyard, and keeps manure sedi
ment and nutrients from entering
the Brandywine Creek. The man
ure storage structure reduced the
need for purchased fertilizer
because it facilitated nutrient man
agement by allowing manure
application at more optimum
times.
Streambank crossings and fenc
ing, as well as the use of rotational
exercise lots will be highlighted at
the Umble farm. Streambank
fencing was installed to protect
the banks of the stream and keep
the cattle out of the water. The
meadow is divided into four lots,
allowing the Umbles to rotate the
cattle from lot to lot based on
grass growth and soil conditions.
Rotating the use of the lots main
tains vegetative cover and keeps
the cows cleaner and more
comfortable.

Dairy Industry Leaders
Determine Key Initiatives
STATE COLLEGE (Centre
Co.) —A core leadership group of
the Pennsylvania Dairy Stake
holders met last week to deter
mine key initiatives which they
will recommend be undertaken to
increase the viability and expan
sion of Pennsylvania’s dairy
industry.
An outgrowth of several years
of meetings by approximately SO
major dairy industry stakeholders,
the key leaders agreed to form
several task forces to submit
reports to major stakeholders in
January 1997. If the larger stake
holder group approves the recom
mendations, a frill study will fol
low to suggest ways to implement
the proposals.
