Boost Fluid
Milk Sales
ROSEMONT, 111. The
boards of Dairy Management
Inc., which manage marketing
and research programs on
behalf of America’s dairy far
mers, and the MiIkPEP board,
which administers the “Milk
Mustache” effort on behalf of
United States fluid milk pro
cessors, have approved two
resolutions to work toward the
common goal of increasing
fluid milk sales.
One resolution calls for
DMI and MiIkPEP to jointly
use the same research and
market data in developing a
common understanding of
consumer segments for deve
loping future marketing plans.
This research is the product
of a major DMI-funded dairy
industry segmentation study
which details the motivations,
attitudes and behavior of milk,
cheese and butter consumers,
as well as channels of distribu
tion and volume
opportunities.
STEPHEN
SNYDER
This data will be used this
winter in the marketing plan
ning process involving nation
al. state and regional dairy
organizations. In the mean
time, DM! and MiIkPEP are to
coordinate their current prog
rams where opportunities
exist.
A second resolution com
mits DMI and MiIkPEP to
continue the Fluid Milk
Strategic Thinking Project,
formed to bring dairy farmers
and processors together to
identify and break through
barriers to fluid milk products
through licensing and co
branding.
In this joint initiative, Milk-
PEP is responsible for the pro
duct development process,
which includes: securing the
licensing and cobranding rela
tionships; conducting
research; packaging; product
formulation, when necessary:
and gaining processor
participation.
DMI, which will actively
participate in all areas, will
have primary responsbility for
funding the launch of new pro
ducts into the marketplace.
Under this plan, the indivi
dual processor would be
responsible for local market
ing and promotional activity.
The initiative for DMI and
MiIkPEP to coordinate their
activities began in January
1996, when both boards agree
d to a joint planning process
for coordinating the fluid milk
programs of the two organiza
tions. The ultimate goal is to
increase fluid milk sales.
