MIFFLINBURG (Union Coun
ty) State Agriculture Secretary
Charles Brosius kicked off the
recent Beaver Fair Livestock Sale
by telling the crowd how impor
tant it is to encourage young peo
ple to learn competition and to be
interested in agriculture through
participation in one of Pennsylva
nia’s 113 county fairs. He also
said his department has programs
in place to help the state’s 50.000
farmers (the largest number in the
U.S.) increase profits, such as
bringing foreign buyers to the
State Farm Show.
The Livestock Sale, which was
held recently in Snyder County,
grossed $29,485 in proceeds for
46 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Totals
were: $11,925. for nine steers;
$13,555 for 62 hogs; $3,165 for 18
lambs; and $405 for nine pens of
two rabbits and nine single fryer
rabbits.
Lance Herman of Beaver
Springs sold his grand champion
pen of two rabbits for $lOO, or $lO
a pound, to Best Mart in Middles
burg. The grand champion single
fryer rabbit exhibited by Larissa
Baney of Selingsgrove went to
Melanie Garman-Shaffer Insur
ance Company in Beaver Springs
for $9O or $2O a pound.
Luke Zerby of Beavertown sold
Jessica Catherman of McClure sold her grand champion
market steer to Roger Moyer of Moyer’s Garage in
Beavertown.

et lamb to Bowersox Livestock of MHfllnburg.
East Central District Show/Beaver Fair

for $3500 or $3.23 a pound. The
sale auctioneer was Bryan Imes
from Port Royal.
East Central District
Dairy Show
Competition was stiff among
the 4-H and FFA exhibitors at the
East Central District Dairy Show
held at the West End Fair Grounds
in Union County with 101 Hol
steins, S 3 Jerseys, 16 Brown
Swiss, 10 Milking Shorthorns, 6
Guernseys, and 2 Ayrshires vying
for breed honors.
Korey Zimmerman of Mifflin
burg caught Judge Paul Knight’s
eye with Zi-We Aerostar Lacy
Lindsay, a senior, two-year-old
Holstein who won the All-Breeds
Owner/ Breeder Trophy. Junior
champion All Breeds Owner/
Breeder was Ronda Mummah of
Port Royal with Mu-Ke Lindy
Snowflake, a fall senior yearling.
In the Holstein competition
Korey Zimmerman’s aged cow.
Zi-SK-CH Vanguard Angel Amy,
won grand champion honors.
Reserve grand champion was Jen
nifer McWilliams’ four-year-old
cow, Anne-How Chairval Special.
Jennifer is from Beavertown.
Junior champion Holstein was
another of Ronda Mummah’s fall
senior yearlings, Walnut Hills
Grand Fury. Reserve junior
champion went to Allen Klingler
of Winfield for Locust-Row Ryan
Becky, a spring junior yearling.
For Jerseys the grand champion
was HE-RO Spring Brass Top
Renee, a senior three-year-old
shown by Kyle Heimbach of Mill
mont Lynne Rcarick of Millhcim
exhibited the reserve champion
and the best animal bred and own
ed, Gladell Elizabeth, a five-year
old.
Kyle’s winter intermediate calf,
HE-RO Spring Dunker Reba was
the junior champion Jersey, with
Matthew Wolfe’s winter calf.
DMW Brownie Turbo Jet 800-
800-P, as the reserve junior
champion and best junior animal
bred and owned.
Aimee Litchard of Danville had
the grand champion Brown Swiss,
five-year-old DML Doras Jade
Jane. Reserve champion went to
Jessica Risser, Middleburg, for
her dry cow 2 years and over,
Dublin Hills TA Abigail-ET.
Best animal bred and owned
and junior champion Brown Swiss
was EJS Jupiters Jolene, a fall
senior calfshown by Eric St. Clair
of Turbotville. Reserve junior
champion was David Alpaugh’s

old, while reserve champion and

Shorthorn was John Troxell’s
winter calf. Walnut Hollow’s Pop
sickle. John is from Middleburg.
Eric St. Clair had the reserve
junior champion, summer yearling
Windy CNTY Sugar Budy 24K
Gold.
In the Guernsey contest Denae
Johnson of Lewisburg showed the
grand champion, Cloverdale
Orange Supreme, a senior two
year-old, with Crown Stone Smo
key Cindy, a senior three-year-old
shown by Scott Womer of Mid
dleburg, as reserve champion.
Denae also has the best animal
bred and owned, ALBO-CRDE
Transmit Pretty, a spring calf who
was also the junior champion.
Reserve junior champion was
Denae’s spring yearling, Wheat
land Magic Milly.
Ayrshire grand champion went
to Jennifer McWilliams, Beaver
town, for the five-year-old Mount
Haven Jewels’ Bambi with
reserve champion going to Geof
frey Fredd, Spring Mills, for Oak-
Pine Sailor Nina, a junior three
year-old.

The Union County West End Fair had a surprise ending
an Ayrshire as Supreme Champion, shown here with
exhibitor Dan Rlshel. A senior at Mlffllnburg High School,
Dan milks 35 Ayrshlres and three Holsteins at Three
Springs Farm in New Columbia. He and his sister Jenn
showed 17 Ayrshlres at the fair, which was Judged by
Michael Heath of Westminster, Maryland.
