America’s First Lexicographer
October 16 marks the birthday, in 1758, of Noah
Webster, author of the first American dictionary.
Webster made his living as a lawyer, journalist,
and school teacher, but we tend to remember him for
the many words he folded into the Compendious
Dictionary of the English Language, published in
1806, and, in 1828, the American Dictionary of the
English Language In 1783 his American Spelling
Book appeared, which first Americanized the
English spelling of such words as “colour" and
"labour” by dropping the u Webster wrote his
dictionaries in longhand

3 pounds crab apples, then simmer in a stainless

and heifers steady to 1.00 higher. Demand
very good for feeders. Steer and heifer
calves steady to 2.00 higher, most advance
on heavier weight steer calves and plainer
heifer calves. Calf demand good with con
siderable improvement on hdfets. Quality
plain to average, few attractive calves.
Large supply of thin Brahman cross feed
ers with no discounting despite the fall sea
son. This indicating good demand from
Texas feedlots. Feeder cattle in medium to
thin flesh; calves medium to fleshy condi
tions. Weigh-ups average to full. Weather
perfect last week for planting wheat State
is approximately 2/3rds planted through
today. Slaughter cows and bulls steady.
Packer demand moderate with all are*s
participating but Texas buyers most
aggressive. Country buyers continue to
gather nearly all the thin young cows and
bred cows under 7 years old for winter
grazing. 840 cows and bulls sold with 65
percent to packers. Receipts this week
11,925; last week 10,434; last year 8,476.
Supply consisted of 60 percent yearlings
and calves over 600 lbs; 33 percent calves
under 600 lbs; 7 percent cows and bulls.
