4-H Rabbit Show
The Southeast 4-H Rabbit
Show was held recently at the
Berks County Ag Center in
Leesport.
Approximately 30 exhibiters
showed 100 rabbits and cavies.
Grand champion rabbit was a
Californian owned by Rachel
Meas, Spinnerstown. Reserve rab
bit was a Lilac Rex owned by
Ryan Geschwindt,
Shoemakersville.
Grand champion cavy was a
Tortoise-shell and white Ameri
can owned by Rachel Slotcavage,
North Catasaqua. She also showed
the reserve grand champ with a
Silver Agouti American.
Best of Breed winners were

4-H Scholarships
Mercantile Bankshares Corpo
ration has presented $20,000 in
scholarship awards to nine 4-H
Club members for top achieve
ments during the Maryland State
Fair.
The scholarships in tribute to
Mercantile’s former chairman,
William E. McGuirk Jr. and his
wife who, with their 15 children,
have been longtime supporters
and participants in 4-H programs.
‘This generous gift to the 4-H
Slate Fair participants is a marvel
ous boost to the total program,”
said 4-H State Fair Coordinator
Claudia Payne. “We were greatly
surprised and so very pleased.”

4-H Gardeners
Donate Produce
The 4-H families who had veg
etable gardens at the Garrett-
Williamson Farm at Newtown
Square had a very productive
season.
Recently the seven families
harvested their excess produce
and donated it to the Philabun
dance Share the Harvest program.
Philabundance distributes food to
a wide network of community
groups and shelters that assist
low-income people, according to
Bud Bryan, Delaware County 4-H
coordinator.
The gardening group is part of
the 4-H Agricultural Club that
meets at the 4-H Farm and Educa
tional Centra 1 on the Bishop Hol
low Road property of the Garrett-
Williamson Foundation in New
town Square. Debbie Murphy of
Collingdale is the adult volunteer
leader of the garden project The
4-H members are Emilie and
Robert Davis, Springfield; Karen

and Adam Muiphy, Collingdale;

speaking their language, to the
more culturally sensitive class
rooms of today. Then join Cathay
Snyder for an informative talk and
slide presentation on the Carlisle
Indian school, which operated
from 1879-1918.
