MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.)
For the first time that exhibitors
could recall, the same person won
both grand and reserve champion
market hog titles at the Manheim
Swine Show Monday evening.
A jubilant Corey Pfautz said, “I
tried a long time for this.”
Corey has been showing hogs
for 10 years. Of the 98 entries.
Judge Henry Holloway, a York
shire breeder from Darlington,
Md., selected the two Hamp/Duroc
cross champions for heavy mus
cling, extreme leaness, and power
fully made structure and design.
Corey said both are homebred.
“It’s genetics. The mother won at
E-town last year.”
He had the sow AI bred from an
Indiana boar.
Corey and his siblings raise 60
show pigs on their parents’ Rick
and Sue Pfautz’s form in Lititz.
Although Corey isn’t new to win
ning circles, he said this was the
first time he showed the champion
at Manheim.
The show earnings will go tow
ard Corey’s schooling at York
Technical Institute, where he is
studying drafting.
Corey also placed second in the
most advanced class Qf showman
ship and fitting. But it was Tracy
Bollinger who took top honors by
impressing the judge with her abil
ity to keep her pig where he could
see it on the opposite side of the
ring.
Tracy’s younger brother Derick
has some of his sister’s finesse in
showmanship. He took the champ
ion placing in the 11-13 year-old
age group.
“First impressions are real
important,” Holloway said of his
observation that Derick appeared
“real calm and easy” in his ability
to maneuver his pig around the
ring. Derick also showed the
champion mediumweight market
hog.
In the 14-15 year-old class,
Amy Becker took the top placing.
In the 8-10 year-old class,
Joelynn Donough placed first. The
spunky 9 year-old in her first year
of showing both pigs and sheep has
been raking up wins across the
county, not only in showmanship
but in champions. At Manheim,
she also showed the lightweight
market hog champion.
