for food production. The world’s
cities and towns are in or near fer
tile river valleys and areas that
contain prime farmland. Prime
farmland is a very small area of
land when compared to all the mar
ginal, grazing and highly erodible
farmland. As the cities and towns
expand prime farmland is destroy
ed forever. In the U.S. almost 4
square miles of prime farmland are
destroyed every day, which is one
third of all land developed for
roads, houses and facto
ries. The third problem
of soil erosion is more
massive than most peo
ple realize. Most far
mers worldwide are not'
practicing adequate soil
conservation even
though many low or no
cost best management
practices (BMP’s) are
available. Every time
there’s a thunderstorm,
fast rain or flood, rivers
run brown and dump
precious topsoil in the
Chesapeake Bay, Gulf
of Mexico and the
world’s oceans. As the
topsoil layer gets thin
ner, yields will suffer.
New seed varieties
won’t help much.
There’s a limit on solar
energy and water per
acre so why does the
Hudson Institute expect
great increases in yield?
Other factors to con
sider are high salinity on
irrigated land and cities
taking water rights from
fanners.
In conclusion, let me
state that a major por
tion of information that
is heard or read is dis
torted or falsified for
various reasons. An
example of this hap
pened before the Civil
War. Literature was
printed that proved that
the Bible supported
slavery and buying and
selling of people. I hope
Lancaster Farming
readers have a large var
iety of reading materials
to help them form a truer
picture of the world.

I really enjoy the
L.F., especially the “B”
section. It usually
comes on Monday here
in Western PA, Once in
a blue moon it comes on
a Saturday. I like to read
Joyce Bupp write-ups, if
anybody knows words,
she does. If you don’t
read it, please do, it’s
worthwhile.
The write-ups of the
past dairy princess Sat,

written by Louann Good
was very good.

Have home cooked meals and
bakery, and sell jug milk. Their
buttermilk is the best tasting but
termilk with bits of butler. Their
slogan at the store, “The Spring
House,” stop to see us. Want to get
to know you. When I come to the
store, it’s usually afternoon time. I
see Sam Minor, Bev’s husband
with his rosey cheeks looking
around for a bite to eat, as he was
up before breakfast doing chores,
milking the moos. Also see Mars
ha Minor making pies, they all arc
hard working people.
As their past milk maids related
their experiences to being chosen
dairy princesses, they talked about
what it did to them in their lives.
They still are promoting milk.
