Grain Market
ST. JOSEPH, MO
OCTOBER 2, 1996
Grain and soybean bidi took another dip
lower, deapile the talk of froct acron the
Midweit tonight Traden ideas that bidi
have been ovenold lately, made tech in leal
corrections. Lack of new export demand
also weakened bids. Wheat 4 to 16 cents
lower. Com 2 to 5 cents lower. Sorghum 6
to 11 cents lower. Soybeans 3to 9 cents
lower. Wheat planting continues to make
progress this week as favorable weather
allowed fields to dry. Bids fell moderately
lower in response to sharp declines in com
and bean bids. Export demand hat been
very slow this week after earlier tales to
Pakistan. Com and soybean bids fell sharp
ly lower again due to profit taking on the
board and trade corrections on the floor.
Frost it possible tonight throughout the
Midwest but some.believe it had been fac
tored into the market earlier. Exports are
slow this week. Soybean bids have defi
nitely dropped as a week ago bids were
8.06. Harvest pressure for com and soy
beans, weighed on bids. U.S. Export Sales:

Feeder Cattle
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK
OCTOBER 2,1996
Compared to last Monday: Feeder steers
1.00-2.00 higher; feeder heifen steady to
1.00 higher. Demand good for steers, mod
erate for heifen. Steer calves Heady to 2.00
higher; heifer calvea 1.00-3.00 lower.
Demand fairly good for steer calvea, light
for heifer calvei. Quality of aupply con
tinues average to many plain. Weigh-ups
average to full. Feeder flesh medium to
slightly thin. Calf flesh medium to fleshy.
Feedlot attitude* improving toward accu
mulation of feeder cattle. Factors influenc
ing the bull trend are a light slaughter last
week prompted by green fat cattle sup
plies; a downtrending com market; and
lighter supplies of 700-900 lb yearlings.
Calf buyers continue to pick the cream and
concentrate on steers at no hurry to accu
mulate wheat calves. Can't turn out for
another month and many farmers having
trouble planting due to wet fields. Slaugh
ter cows 1.00-2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls
2.50 higher. Demand good for slaughter
cows, especially Utilities. Demand con
tinues very good for young thin cows and
bred cows under 7 years. These will take
advantage of abundant winter feed condi
tions. With com harvest well under way
several cows are being gathered to graze
com stalks. Total of 1,050 cows and bulls
sold 60 percent going to packers. Receipts
this week 10,450; last week 14,255; last
year 8,211. Supply consisted of 60 percent
yearlings and calves over 600 lbs; 31 per
cent calves under 600 lbs; 9 percent cows
and bulls. Prices follow with weighted
average weight and price in parenthesis.
