Roberts, 15, of Pleasantville (Washington/Frederick counties) won the senior championship by a landslide in 4-H bicycle competi tion held August 24 on opening day of the Maryland State Fair in Timonium. ‘There were 57 contes tants in the three age brackets. Robert Currier, 18, of Florence (Howard County) placed second in the senior contest. Daniel Dell, 13, of Finksburg, a Baltimore County 4-H member, was the Intermediate-age champion, with Jason Blades, 13, of Trappe (Tal bot County) a close second. Brian Brubach, 11, of Camber (Carroll County) won the junior contest, narrowly defeating 10-year-old Jacquelyn Roderick of Walkersville (Frederick County). Brian Roberts is no stranger to the winner’s circle in the state 4-H bicycle contest He is undefeated in this event, capturing the intermediate-age championship in 1993 and the junior championship in 1991. This makes him the first Maryland 4-H member ever to win all three age group champion ships in the state contest. He also won the state 4-H aer ospace contest held earlier this summer and could have repre sented Maryland in that category at the Purdue University event. Brian is the third member of his family to win the Maryland senior 4-H bicycle championship. His brother, Shawn, now 17, won in 1994, and his sister, Erin, now 20, won in 1991. Both went on to win national championships in 4-H bicycle competition. The Roberts family teen-agers live in southeast Washington County: but they were members of the Pctersvillc 4-H club in Freder ick County. In addition to bicycle competition, they are enthusiastic participants in the 4-H and FFA goat show each year at the Mary land State Fair. Two younger family members show promise of continuing the Roberts family winning tradition in state 4-H bicycle competition. Tara Roberts, 12, won the junior contest in 1993 and the intermediate-age contest in 1995. Her brother, Kevin, 10, was the junior winner last year.
