Strawbridge Wins Kutztown Swine Championship

the cnampionship. Katie is in the
11th grade at Tulpehocken High
School.
But Kelly. IS, Bethel, was more
than happy to show the York
crossbred gilt, the heavyweight
champion. In fact, Katie’s hogs
nearly swept the 231-242 pound
class. Kelly said her friend’s hogs
were obtained from the Oscar
Manbeck farm in Bethel.
Daryl Grumbine, show judge,
picked John Strawbridge’s
medium weight champion, a
crossbred Hampshire gilt, for
reserve. When picking the medium
weight champion, Grumbine told
those attending there was “one pig
that excels the others in terms of
total amount of red'meat in the
package.”
Throughout the judging, Grum
bine said that the industry is look
ing for those hogs that are structur
ally sound, real lean in makeup,
and that would hang “a super type
of carcass.”
In all, there were a total of 37
exhibitors and ISI hogs.

Gloucester County 4-H Fair Open
Steer and Heifer Show was held
here on Friday, July 26.
Fred Weaver, a livestock far
mer, cattle fitter, and showman
judged the show. He is a former
member of Penn Slate University
Livestock Judging Team.
Steers and heifers from
Gloucester, Salem, and Hunterdon
counties were paraded before and
evaluated by Weaver at the
Gloucester County Fairgrounds.
Grant Coleman of Salem Coun
ty showed his May crossbred

championship of the show.
