LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Farming Staff KIMBERTON (Chester Co.) — Jersey competition at the Kimber ton Community Fair was a night to remember for Tarik Gaffney. “It’s one of my goals come true,” said the 18-year-old who works for Top-O-Hill Farm, own ed by his mentor Mildred Seeds. In addition to being named the champion showman and fitter, Gaffney, who has five of his own Jerseys, swept championship and reserve titles in both Jersey junior and senior competitions and the 4-H grand champion overall. “My goal is to be as good as showman as my 4-H leader, Mildred Seeds,” Gaffney said of his employer. Seeds, who has Idng been known as the outstanding Jersey breeder and exhibitor, won champ ion and reserve titles in the open show of Jersey competition. ‘This show is the best I ever judged,” said Warren Buckman, who is a Holstein breeder. ‘This Jersey quality beats most other breed shows hands down. These Jerseys have good quality frames, impressive dairyness, and udders.” In the junior 4-H show, Gaf fney’s senior heifer calf Admiral Peaches of Top-O-Hill was named champion and also reserve in the open show. Top-O-Hill Imperial Tammy was the reserve in the junior 4-H show. In the senior 4-H show, Gaf fney’s Top-O-Hill Imperial Trink et, a junior 2-year-old, was selected champion, which went on to become the 4-H grand champion overall. The reserve was Top-O- Hill Admiral Lucky Penny. The open show, which runs simulpmeously with the 4-H show, was dominated with Seed’s show string. Her junior champion was a senior heifer calf named Tpp-O- Hill Imperial Thread. Senior champion in the open show was Seeds’ aged cow Top-O- Hill Admiral Theda J, which la ted captured the title as grand champ ion overall of the open show. Reserve senior champion was 3-year-old Top-O-Hill Juno Tonya. Other showmanship and fitting champions in addition to Gaffney in the senior division were Vicky Hewitt, who placed first in fitting in the age 12- 14-year-old division. Jerseys Excel At Kimberton Fair In the same division, Julie Sollen berger placed first in showmanship. Hewitt, 15-year-old daughter of Danielle and Robert Hewitt, helps her parents with their 100-head of Jerseys and Holsteins at their Spring City farm. Sollenberger, 14-year-old daughter of Holly and David Sol lenberger of Spriiig City helps with the 40 head of Jerseys, Guernseys, and Holsteins on die farm. Nine-year-old Becky Baily swept both fitting and showman ship titles in the 8-11-year-old division. She leases a Jersey calf from Top-O-Hill Farm and raises it on the family's West Chester farm known for its Lineback cattle. She is the daughter of Jane and Bernard Baity.
