Basketball Practice Doesn’t Deter Lebanon Swine Champion
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Farming Staff
NORTH CORNWALL (Leba
non Co.) For want of a better
expression, the Lebanon Hog
Show is a tale of divided loyalties.
In other words, you can’t be in
two places at one time.
Ask Jeremy (Jake) Mase.
Because of the stringent obliga
tions of basketball camp, on Mon
day morning he wasn’t able to see
his lightweight champion hog
move all the way up to supreme
market hog at the Lebanon Fair.
Instead, he was busy at the Annvil
le Cleona basketball minicamp at
Messiah Collegb.

judge Randy Smith.

Show, from left, Dan Atkins, reserve, and Wendy Atkins,
champion.
Mase, Lebanon, asked a friend,
Blaine Brown, to show the
Hampshirc/Duroc gilt, obtained
from Larry Arnold, Womelsdorf.
While Jake was away training to be
a varsity basketball player (he
wasn’t home the whole month of
July, said his mom, Irene), Blaine
showed the hog for Jake’s first
Lebanon championship.
“Figures that he loves to show
pigs, and the first time he can’t
show he wins championship,” said
his father, Ken. “But athletics are
his first priority.” Jake works on
his parent’s 80-cow dairy farm in
Lebanon.
Irene Mase said that Jake was
feeding the 231-pound hog, the
crossbred champion, “a little bit of
cow’s milk,” she said. “I don’t
know if that helped or not.” Ken
said that his son, an eight-year
Lebanon County Swine Club 4-H
member, will take a little bit out of
his busy schedule (Jake plays foot
ball, basketball, and baseball) to
attend the sale later in the week.
Show judge Randy Smith said
he appreciated the “clean, eye
appealing” lightweight pig. one
that showed “tremendous size.”
Smith chose the heavyweight
champion shown by Wendy Atk
ins as reserve champion market
hog. He said the hog “intrigues me
as far as being a big hog, but not the
leanest, though with a lot of
muscle.” The 275-pound
crossbred hog, shown by Wendy,
was produced from her own sow
using semen from an Oscar Man
beck boar.
Wendy, 17, daughter of Bill and
Judy Atkins. Lebanon, is a 10-year
4-H member and attends Cedar
Crest High School.
Randy Smith, show judge, is
herdsman for Isler Purebreds,
Prospect, Ohio. Smith raises Dur
oc. York, Landrace, and Hamp
shire hogs. Last year, Isler Pure
breds produced the champion
junior barrow at the Ohio State
Fair and the champion open show
barrow at the state fair. Smith also
farms with his parents, who man
age 60 sows and specialize in the
show pig business.
