    An Uplifting Man
August 3 marks the birthday of the inventor of the
elevator, Elisha Graves Otis, who was bom in 1811
and raised in Halifax. Vermont. His invention of the
first passenger elevator stemmed from a device he
fashioned to make the hoisting of machinery safer. In
1853 he demonstrated his freight elevator at the famous
Crystal Palace exhibition in Hyde Park, London. Public
confidence was increased, and by 1861 he established a
manufacturing company for steam-driven elevators His
idea held great weight with the architects, because it
allowed them to design the skyscraper.
