EPHRATA (Lancaster Co.)
On July 9, the Ephrata Area
Young Fanners held an event at
Harold Martin’s Farm. The speak
er for this event was Derek Pritts,
a state conservation who
did a presentation on Ginseng,
which is traditionally known as an
Asian herb.
American ginseng is one of this
country’s best kept secrets,
according to Mr. Pritts, who'Tias
more than 30 years experience
growing and hunting ginseng.
The seeds of ginseng arc as
large as a sweet com seed and
should be planted between August
1 and 30, in a shaded area, for best
results. (A recommendation for
planting would be in a forestry
area, although artificial shade is
acceptable.) The best time to dig
for the ginseng root is when the
plant is full of berries.
Mr. Pritts informed us that 9S
percent of ginseng that is grown in
the U.S. will be shipped to Asia to
be used as a medical herb. Asians
value this plant so much that they
are willing to pay top dollar.
