DENVER, Colo. Livestock producers from throughout the country will travel to Washington, D.C. June 23-26 to meet with members of Congress and Clinton administration officials about con centration in the livestock sectors and other areas impacting their in dustry, such as transportation and credit. National Farmers Union’s (NFU) legislative fly-in is aimed at focusing attention on the eco nomic crisis facing livestock pro ducers. Many cattle producers have seen their market prices drop by as much as 50 percent over the past two years. ‘This grassroots fly-in will en able livestock producers to direct ly communicate their concerns and ideas for change with U.S. lawmakers and rule makers,” said NFU President Leland Swenson. “NFU has long held that the con centration of livestock processing companies is detrimental to pro ducer prices and provides no price advantage for consumers.” According to the U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture, four compan ies now account for 87 percent of PHONE: 717-626-1184 or 717-394-3047 PAX 717-733-6058 Mon., Tueft., Wed., Frl. 8 AM to 5 PM; Thun. 7 AM to 5 PM Lancaster Farming 1 E. Fly-in participants are expected to voice their support for recom mendations within the report which they believe will enhance economic opportunities for live stock producers. Committee recommendations expected to receive the most atten tion are increased monitoring and enforcement of anti-trust regula tions, establishment of a disclo sure policy on captive supplies, more timely and accurate informa tion on price and volume of im- RUY.SEI We Now Accept Visa (Word Ads Only) "■ ■ ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■» = ?«■ CLASSIFIED AD ORDER BLANK PLEASE WRITE CLEARLY K LANCASTER FARMING > f P.O. Farmers Union is also supportive of recommendations to maintain competitive transporta tion alternatives, as well as moni toring and limitation of transporta tion rates by the Surface Trans portation Board, where there is little or no competition.
