A32-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 22, 1996 BY DEFINITION . There are chapters in every life which are seldom read and cer tainly not aloud. Carol Shields During the last few months, I have had the good fortune to write some articles lot Lancaster Farm ing. Some of these articles had substance, some were opinion, and others were intended as “food for thought” for your reading enjoyment If you are like me, probably the last thing you want to do is read an article where the author consistent ly uses words that are beyond your normal vocabulary. Sometimes we can derive the meaning of these words simply by the context in which they are used; sometimes we think we know the meaning of certain words, but are unsure: and still other times I find myself puzzled as to the message that the author is trying to convey. Regardless of the particular situ ation, I am as reluctant as the next person to find a dictionary and determine the meaning of a word, but I eventually find the word anyway. In the coming weeks and months, 1 may use some of the fol lowing words in articles, so I want to make sure that I understand them before I use them. My hope is that all of us may understand them better.
