Jim Hanson, associate professor in
the Department of Agricultural
and Resource Economics at the
University of Maryland at College
Park’s (UMCP) College of Agri
culture and Natural Resources,
has been appointed assistant direc
tor for agriculture and natural re
sources of the college’s coopera
tive extension service. Hanson as
sumed his new duties on June 1.
“Dean Fretz and I are confident
that Jim is the correct person for
this job,” said Dr. James C. Wade,
associate dean and associate direc
tor for extension, in announcing
the appointment "His experience,
attitudes, and philosophies will
help to ensure the continuing de
velopment of a strong Maryland
Cooperative Extension Service.
We appreciate his willingness to
take on this important leadership
role.”

agronomy and a doctorate in agri
cultural economics. He also re
ceived a master’s in plant breed
ing and genetics from the Univer
sity of Minnesota.
Hanson was appointed regional
farm management specialist for
the Maryland Cooperative Exten
sion Service in June 1988. Since
that time he has been instrumental
in the success of three major ex
tension projects: the Southern
Maryland Regional Farmers’
Market, the Mid-Atlantic Produce
Project, and the Profitable Agri
culture and Clean Environment
(PACE) program. His work
earned him the Excellence In Ex
tension Award from the UMCP
College of Agriculture Alumni
Chapter in 1993 and the Distin
guished Extension Program
Award from the American Agri
cultural Economics Association in
1994.
