Mandy Stewart Reigns In Mifflin

What does Jack’s adventures up
the Bean Stalk have to do with
dairy product promotion?
Plenty, according to Mandy
Stewart, Mifflin County’s new
Dairy Princess!
Drinking lots of milk, Mandy
explained in her skit presentation
during the dairy princess competi
tion, gave Jack the strength to
climb the bean stalk, run from the
gaint and chop down the bean
stalk. Unfortunately, Jack had sold
his cow for the magic beans. Now,
Mandy concluded, Jack wants his
cow back because good strong
muscles and bones from drinking
milk are worth more than golden
coins and a singing harp.
Mandy’s skit presentation
helped her win the title of Mifflin
County Dairy Princess at the
pageant recently at Saint John’s
Lutheran Church in Belleville. A
large crowd turned out to see three

girls compete for the title. Each
contestant presented a speech and
a skit and were asked the same
impromptu question
Mandy Stewart, 19, is the
daughter of John Ste wart of Lew
istown and Lucrel’a Keister of
Bellefonte. She graduated from
Lewistown Area High School in
1995 and is now a student on the
dean’s list at Penn State, majoring
in elementary education. A mem
ber of the Vira 4-H Dairy Club,
Mandy owns and shows several
dairy cows which she houses at
Goss’s dairy farm in Vira.
Marlene Smith of Belleville and
Bridget Gearhart of McVeytown
will serve as dairy princess
alternates.
Marlene Smith, 16, is the
daughter of Martin J. and Mary L.
Smith. She is a sophomore at
Indian Valley High School where
she is a member of the German
Club, the German student forum,
the science club, and soccer team.
She’s also a junior librarian and a
member of the Sacred Heart youth
group.
Seventeen-year-old Bridget
Gearhart is the daughter of Donald
and Eileen Gearhart. A junior at
Mount Union High School,
Bridget plans to attend West
Chester University to major in
music and elementary education.
She is active in many high school
organizations, is president of her
church youth group, and served as
an alternate dairy princess last
year.
Mifflin County’s 1196/96 dairy
princess Diane Yoder gave her
farewell speech during the prog
ram. She made 183 appearances to
promote dairy products, including
63 school presentations. Diane is i
sales representative for Fisher
Honey, Lewistown.
Natalie Byler, Candace Click,
Laura Peachey, all of Belleville.
Megan Goss of Vira, and Bethany
Wingert of McVeytown will serve
as dairy maids. Alisha Click of
Belleville, Ashley Ranck and Ste
phanie Meinnert, both of Lewis
town, will serve as Dairy Misses.

Earlier in the month, Mary L.
Smith entered her Black Walnut
Cake with Buttercream icing in a
dairy bake-off competition. Her
real dairy recipe follows.
Black Walnut Cake
Vi cup butter
VA cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 3 A cup flour
3 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
VA cup black walnuts
Mix all ingredients together and
bake for one hour at 300 degrees F
in a greased and floured 9”x13”
cake pan.
Buttercream Icing
Vt cup butter
2-3 tablespoons solid vegetable
shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla
V* teaspoon salt
4 cups confectioners sugar (add
1 cup at a time
4 tablespoons milk
Blend butter, shortening, vanil
la and salt together until creamy.
Add sugar one cup at a time. Add
milk to thin. Blend all until
smooth. Spread on cake that has
cooled.
