ADVERTISEMENTS ...
SLOGANS TO SELL
OUR PRODUCT
Thinking is the hardest work
there is, which is probably the rea
son so few engage in it.
Henry Ford
Think about the most recent
time you read a newspaper or a
magazine, watched TV, or listened
to the radio. How many advertise
ments did you see or hear? What
companies were featured in those
advertisements? Why do compa
nies advertise? What were they
selling?
Typically, a company has a pro
duct or service that benefits people
directly or indirectly. People have
to want or need a product or ser
vice in order to pay for it. Although
we are virtually bombarded with
several hundred or thousands of
advertisements daily, we only
recall certain slogans that compa
nies use to feature their products.
In junior livestock programs we
have a few slogans that many of us
recall with ease. For instance, the
4-H motto is, ‘To make the best
better.”
Have you ever thought about
slogans or mottos that could be
taken from their original context
and used elsewhere?
I have classified advertising slo
gans used by major companies into
three categories: (1) slogans a
livestock jockey might use, (2) slo
gans junior livestock program par
ticipants should use, and (3) slo
gans for adults and parents
involved with junior livestock
programs.
Some of these ads have been
modified slightly to fit the situa
tion and the original words are pre
sented in parentheses. I realize that
some of these slogans could be
reclassified and have dramatically
different connotations. You may.
want to read the entire list the fust
time, then as you read the list for
the second time omit the name of
the company.
I hope you find the lists intrigu
ing, with the ultimate goal of sti
mulating additional dialog among
those of us who support ethical
junior livestock programs.
