But neither is native Forsythia made its way from
South China to London by way ot Robert Fortune, a
plant hunter for the Royal Horticultural Society. It was
then named for William Forsyth, a founding member. A
few plants set sail for America with settlers in 1860.
Lilacs, from the Persian word for indigo, may have come
from Persia to New Hampshire in 1695 and later
traveled west across America. This, and many entertain
ing garden tidbits from rhubarb tonics to
iging earthworms, can be found in The
Old Farmer’s Almanac Book of Carden

Stocker steers and heifers steady. Demand
moderate to good. Quality and conditions
similar to last week. Weigh-ups gaunt to
full. Quality of supply plain to average,
moderate end attractive. Bulk supply feed
er cattle and these in medium to fleshy con
dition. Flesh generally lighter than a typi
cal May off wheat run. Light rains Monday
thru most of Oklahoma. Slaughter cows
.50-1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 1.50 high
er. Packer demand good, especially from
Northern buyer*. Texas plant* continue to
receive enough local cows but many of
these thin and light weight thus they show
some interest locally for the belter cows.
Replacement cow buyers very quiet Long

ter. Good quality young pain selling at
slaughter equivalence. Total of 500 cow*
and bulls sold, 85 percent going to packers.
