National
Grain Market
ST. JOSEPH, MO
MAY 15, 1996
Sunshine md clearing weather got no
respect in the grain and soybean trade
Wednesday. Trends highly mixed for dif
ferent commodities, except soybeans defi
nitely lower. Wheat 1 to 14 cents lower,
except Portland 9 to 7 cents higher. Com 1
to .7 cents higher, except the com state of
lowa 2 to 1 cents lower. Sorghum 4 cents
higher to 3 cents lower. Soybeans 2 to 4
cents lower.
Most sunshine for any one day the past
three weeks in the Western Combcll today
and moving Bast. However, ground is
waterlogged many places and will take a
few days before com planter and wheat
drills can start rolling again. Forecast next
6-10 days calls for continued cold and
damp conditions in Spring Wheat country
and crops much behind normal Trade war
talks in the making for one of our big cus
tomers, China. Many elevators lowered
their basis and futures also lower. New
crop Hard Red Winter wheat quoted 7 over
the July and many producers very happy
with 6.55 wheat if it holds through harvest
If sunshine gets into Eastern Combelt and
dries out the area, many more acres of com
will be planted even though it it getting
late in the season. High prices draw big
acreage and a little gamble, despite the fact
normally yields drop one bushel per acre-'
per day after May IS. Elevators adjusted
their com basis lower today but throwing
out December bids of 3.58 for new crop
and that is at a very good money-making
level. Soybeans taking a low profile and
just waiting to tee how many acres King
Com will leave them. Elevators bidding
7.80 for new crop beans and that it a very
good alternative to go to if com does not
get planted.
