DEKALB. lU.—Dekalb Gene
tics Corporation said that its new
ly developed com seed resistant to
the herbicide glufosinate has
received all necessary clearances
from U.S. government agencies,
and that its glufosinate resistant
hybrids may now be commercial
ized in the U.S.
The Food and Drug Admi
nistration and the U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture have both
completed their reviews of
Dekalb’s Glufosinate-resistant
com.
The FDA informed Dekalb that
it had concluded its food and feed
safety assessment review of com
grain, fodder, and silage derived
from the glufosinate-resistant line,
and it has concluded that no issues
arc raised that would require pre
market review by the FDA.
Dekalb provided data to the FDA
showing that glufosinate-resistant
com is not materially different in
composition, nutrition and safety
from com that is currently grown,
marketed and consumed by ani
mals and humans.
Separately, the USDA’s Ani
mal and Plant Health Inspection
Service (APHIS) determined that
Dekalb’s glufosinate-resistant
com line does not pose a plant pest
risk and therefore is no longer sub
ject to APHIS regulations. This
determination was based on infor
mation provided by Dekalb, a

facturer, AgrEvo, anticipates that
the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency will approve the use of

market the herbicide under the
trade name Liberty™.
