Mother’s Day Letters
H liana,-an ancient spring festival to honor the mother
goddess, Cybele, may have been the precusor to
Mother’s Day. Medieval England celebrated
Mothering on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when
apprentices got "the day off] to visit their mothers, often
bringing an almond-flavored fruitcake. In the U.S.,
several late-19th century attempts to honor motherhood
faded, until Anna M. Jarvis of Philadelphia began a
letfdmriting campaign, around 1907, and
got Mother’s Day recognized at the
state level. In 1914, President
Woodrow Wilson issued the
national proclamation. See
what a letter can do?
A hustling mother makes a slothful daughter.
Latin proverb.
If soot falls on the carpet, sprinkle it first with salt. Then
it can be brushed up without leaving a black stain.
